Seagreen Offshore Wind farm – Onshore SESU Pipe Installation

Project Overview

A new 1,075 MW wind farm located 27 km off the Angus Coast is due to be operational in 2024 – featuring 114 MHI vestas 10MW wind turbines. We assisted Nexans to connect the Seagreen offshore windfarm to the Scottish National Grid; with connection of 3 off 272m SESU pipes to Landfall pipes at coast of Carnoustie Golf Links.

Service Details

Our team included highly experienced Menzi operator, Menzi Muck M545, restraint excavator and operator (to assist with safe rescue if required due to unexpected tide movements or mechanical failures).

The Menzi machine with our skilled operator is much more stable than a standard excavator – this equipment therefore was perfectly suited to this project due to the ability to transverse on soft/unstable ground conditions. Our machinery fuel and oils are fully bio-degradable therefore removing the risk of a harmful spill to the local ecosystem.

We worked within small access tidal windows to uncover landfall pipes buried within the coast, so that spool pieces could be connected. These spool pieces would then be connected to the offshore pipeline. An assistant to the Menzi team probed for the pipe – where this could not be found, Menzi operator skilfully excavated small amounts of sand until the pipes were uncovered. Masses of material were dumped downstream and on shallow terrain so not to interfere with the trench connection point. The Menzi operator assisted for each spool piece connection throughout the project. The Menzi operator also assisted with the engagement of the XLJet during low tide by lifting it onto the pipeline during lowtide.

SG Elite were delighted to help the efforts to provide greener energy. We provided an efficient, safe & environmentally friendly method for the installation of SESU pipes. We executed this exciting project within programme.
